About the Artwork +

This spectacular Pichwai painting by master artist Shehzaad Ali Sherani depicts a highly ornate and lush garden scene, celebrating the sacred setting of nature. Originating in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, Pichwai paintings traditionally serve as backdrops in temples dedicated to the worship of Shrinathji, a seven-year-old manifestation of Krishna. Notably, the artwork utilizes real gold for embellishment, contributing significantly to its brilliance and material value.

The composition is a dense, stylized tapestry dominated by various shades of green, illustrating a vast forest landscape. It features numerous flowering and fruiting trees, such as Banana Palms and Kadamba Trees. This abundant natural setting is filled with life: beautiful peacocks, birds of various types are subtly hidden or perched within the tree branches, swans and ducks glide on a floral lotus pond, and a cow is visible within the mysterious foliage. The entire scene captures nature's abundant bounty and the peaceful, sacred atmosphere of the garden.

The scene is anchored by sacred elements and companion figures. To the left, a Shrinathji mandir (temple) is presented, depicted as a beautiful dome-shaped pavilion housing the deity's highly ornamented portrait. This sanctuary is where the deity is offered sacred Bhog (food offering). In the center foreground, a Gopi (cowherdess) is seated in a contemplative pose on a raised, pillared white pavilion with a gilded dome, wearing a striking red garment. Further enriching the royal setting, two ornately caparisoned elephants, draped in rich red and gold coverings, underscore the divine majesty of the garden. The painting also includes a Gopa (cowherd) adoring the greenery and another luxuriously dressed Gopi standing nearby, filling the space with Krishna's companions.

This enchanting composition, celebrating the divinity associated with Shrinathji and the splendour of the natural world, is a visual treat that elevates any space with the divinely artistic tradition of Pichwai.

Real gold is used.
