About the Artwork +
This breathtaking Kalighat artwork by master artist Uttam Chitrakar depicts the eternal dance of the victory of good over evil unfolds with rhythmic elegance and divine force in the form of “Mahishasuramardini”. Kalighat painting ,a vibrant folk art tradition from 19th-century Bengal, is characterised by its bold brushwork, expressive figures, and satirical depictions of mythology and everyday life. The tale of Mahishasuramardini has enchanted generations and continues to do so even today. In this painting, Goddess Durga is represented in all her fierce and resplendent glory, with her ten arms holding divine weapons like the chakra (discus), khagda (sword), spear (vel), etc. Her saree is decorated with floral motifs, each delicate fold painted in strokes of black and white, her palms adorned with red alta, her arms, ears and forehead heavily ornamented to add to her ethereal beauty. At her feet is her loyal vahana, the lion, with his regal mane and body decorated with intricate patterns, his fierce expressions evident as he glares at the slain demon Mahishasura, his buffalo head lying in a pool of blood on the earth. The goddesses Durga is surrounded by other deities, appreciative and worshipping of her feat. To the left is the elephant-headed god Ganesha, with his vahana, the mushaka; above him is the Goddess of prosperity, Lakshmi, with her vahana, the owl, a symbol of wisdom. To the right is the god of war, Kartikeya, with his vahana, the peacock; with the goddess of knowledge and music, Saraswati above him, sitting on her vahana, the swan, with a veena held in her hand. At the top of the painting is the trinity - the creator of the universe, the four headed god Brahma in the center; Lord Vishnu - the sustainer to his left, lying on the coiled serpent Sheshnaag, with his consort Lakshmi by his feet; and to his right is Lord Shiva, with his matted locks and tiger skin, accompanied by Shakti and other celestial beings. Set against a striking vermillion background, the unique features of each deity stand out in black and white, with detailed flowing garments, delicate ornaments and distinct facial features, a characteristic feature of Kalighat paintings. This painting is an ode to the Chitrakar lineage’s legacy of storytelling through line and gesture. Hand-painted with natural dyes, this Kalighat masterpiece not only captures a tale, it invites the viewers to acknowledge the timeless feminine force that holds the power to create, preserve, and destroy.
