About the Artwork +
Saraswati is the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, art, speech, wisdom, and learning. She is a part of the tridevi of Saraswati, along with Lakshmi and Parvati. The goddess Saraswati is often depicted as a beautiful woman dressed in pure white, often seated on a white lotus, which symbolises light, knowledge and truth. Her iconography is typically in white themes from dress to flowers to swan – the colour symbolizing Sattwa Guna or purity, discrimination for true knowledge, insight and wisdom. The four hands hold items with symbolic meaning – a pustaka (book or script), a mālā (rosary, garland), a water pot and a musical instrument (vīnā). The most famous feature on Saraswati is a musical instrument called a veena, representing all creative arts and sciences, and her holding it symbolises expressing knowledge that creates harmony. A hamsa – either a swan or a goose – is often shown near her feet. It thus symbolises the ability to discriminate between good and evil, essence from the outward show, and the eternal from the evanescent. Sometimes a citramekhala (also called mayura, peacock) is shown beside the goddess. The peacock symbolises colourful splendour, the celebration of dance, and – as the devourer of snakes – the alchemical ability to transmute the serpent poison of self into the radiant plumage of enlightenment. She is usually depicted near a flowing river or another body of water, which depiction may constitute a reference to her early history as a river goddess.
About The Artist : An early interest in painting, Rajendra Sharma or Raju ji as we fondly call him, has been interested in art since the age of 10 and has now been a miniature artist for 25 years. A self taught who learnt the intricacies of miniature art on his own as he did not belong to a family of artists, his father was actually a legal draftsman. His dream is to popularise this art in all corners of the world so many more people can continue to learn and take this art forward.
About The Art : Indian Miniatures are small scaled, high detailed paintings. They trace back to the 9th century CE and are considered to be a living art pursued by many artists today. The painting style originated long before the invention of paper, which was produced in India in the 12th century CE. The paintings were created on manuscripts which were made from dried palm leaves or were painted on cloth. By the 12th century, free from restrictions of painting on palm leaf, Indian miniatures grew bigger in format. They began to include more intense colours and extensive border embellishments, with the influence of painting styles of Persia and Mamluks under the Ottomans. Miniature paintings began to break new ground in colour with golds, silvers, and a new ultramarine blue from lapis lazuli.Miniatures were heavily influenced by Indian literature and were often used as illustrations to texts, as well as individual paintings. Indian painters illustrated epics, fables and religious texts, visualising these stories through art for those who might not be able to read. From paintings of the Janamsakhis to illustrated biographies of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism; from Mughal empires to early-Modern India, miniature paintings have expressed and preserved the rich variety of Indian culture and history.
