About the Artwork +

In a moving tribute to the timeless classic "Kabuliwala," master artist Sonali Chitrakar captures the heart of this beloved story through the vivid strokes of Kalighat painting. This artwork brings to life a poignant scene from the iconic film, which is based on Rabindranath Tagore's 1892 short story and starred the legendary Balraj Sahni.

The painting’s central focus is the dignified figure of Rahamat, the Afghan fruit-seller, as he makes his way through the bustling city. The Kalighat style, with its bold lines and expressive eyes, perfectly conveys the Kabuliwala’s gentle nature and the deep longing he holds for his own estranged daughter. His figure is contrasted with the delicate form of Mini, the spirited young girl who befriends him, reminding him of the family he left behind.

The piece beautifully encapsulates the film's core theme: an unexpected bond that transcends age, culture, and geography. It's a visual homage to a narrative about human connection, memory, and the bittersweet nature of love. This painting is a must-have for any admirer of classic cinema and a heartfelt celebration of Tagore's profound storytelling and the enduring magic of the film it inspired.
