About the Artwork +
This painting of highlighting a pair of fishes swimming in a calm rhythmic patter by Ambika Devi is a recurring motif in Mahubani paintings as fishes are considered auspicious in the Mithila region. Madhubani paintings, also known as Mithila paintings, originate in Bihar and Nepal and are primarily painted by women on the walls of the houses. Fishes are considered to present Goddess Lakshmi who showers bountiful blessings of wealth and prosperity; hence the fishes are also believed to bring abundance of good luck in the house. The two fish swimming in a circle at the centre of this painting, represent the circle of life, which continues till eternity in the form of birth, growth, death, and rebirth. This painting is unique due to the use of only three colours, that is red, white, and black, unlike most brightly coloured Madhubani paintings. Red in Madhubani art is used to symbolize passion, energy, fertility, and vitality. Interestingly, fishes are also used to show fertility and abundance. The bright red shading with the bold well-defined strokes in black on a white background creates intricate yet engaging imagery of the fish swimming in water, enhanced by the complex geometrical patterns drawn on the bodies of the fish. As fishes are considered auspicious, they are often drawn during festivals and wedding ceremonies to bring good luck, wealth, and prosperity to the family.
