About the Artwork +
This interesting piece of Madhubani art by Ambika Devi portraying women sitting inside a fish symbolizes fertility, life, and the interconnectedness of human beings with nature. Both fish and women are a symbol of fertility and the women inside the fish represent the sustenance and celebration of life and fertility. This imagery also represents the harmonious co-existence of human beings with nature as humans form an integral part of nature and have the ability of peacefully co-existing with nature without harming it. Fish swimming in water signifies the cycle of life and emotions and the women inside the fish, showcase the transformation and personal growth of the women through the cycle of life as the hidden women are also a metaphor of the hidden strength and power inside a woman that can be revealed when the right time comes. One can also see the fish on top of a bird, while a snake wraps itself around the big wish, signifying the co-existence and dependence of all life forms and showcasing the unity of opposite elements of the Earth depicting a wholistic view of the world. This painting is also a mythological unity of energies as the snake represents Kundalini energy, the fish represents the Matsya avatar of Vishnu, the bird represents the Garuda avatar while the women represent Goddess Shakti the divine feminine energy.
