About the Artwork +

This beautiful Kalamkari painting by Mannasamudram Viswanath Reddy portrays Lord Ganesha. Originating in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the traditional Indian textile art form, involving hand-painting or block-printing on fabric using natural dyes. Their name, derived from "kalam" (pen) and "kari" (work), Kalamkari paintings often depict scenes from Hindu mythology and feature intricate designs with natural dyes.

At the composition's heart, Ganesha sits on Mooshak, his vahana (mount), depicted larger than traditionally seen. According to Hindu mythology, Ganesha is the deity worshipped for knowledge and auspicious beginnings. The artist pays close attention to his iconography, his elephant head, trunk, large years symbolic of hearing difficulties of devotees, his pot belly, his four hands, each holding a symbolic object rich in meaning. In his upper right hand, he holds a lotus bud, symbolizing purity and spiritual awakening. The upper left hand carries a conch (shankha), representing the primordial sound 'Om' and divine energy. His lower left hand holds a laddoo, signifying the rewards of devotion, wisdom and the sweetness of life. Meanwhile, his lower right hand is raised in the abhaya mudra, a gesture of reassurance and blessing, offering protection and removing fear.

Together, these attributes reflect Ganesha’s role as the remover of obstacles and the embodiment of intellect, prosperity, and spiritual harmony. Enclosed within two borders with floral and geometric motifs, set against a golden yellow and red backdrop, the artist shows Ganesha in blue, perhaps symbolic to his divine father Lord Shiva, with gold ornamentation, while the surroundings are adorned with white, blue, red and gold traditional Kalamkari motifs highlighted in black outline.

This piece is a testament to the Kalamkari tradition of storytelling and artistic legacy. It is not just a visual delight, but a symbol of devotion, an invocation to the widely-loved elephant-headed god, a beautiful and meaningful addition to any space.
