About the Artwork +

Venkat Shyam portrays a captivating artwork where two vibrant and colourful fish swim in opposing directions against a fiery red background. The red backdrop symbolises energy, passion, and the pulse of life itself. It serves as a powerful canvas upon which the artist's imagination takes flight. Against this backdrop, two fish, rendered in bold, contrasting hues, become the focal point of the artwork. The first fish, adorned with intricate Gond patterns, bursts forth in a dazzling display of blues, greens, and browns. Its scales seem to shimmer and dance as it gracefully swims to the left. The second fish, equally adorned with Gond motifs, swims to the right in striking shades of green, pink, and blue. The two fish, swimming in opposite directions, embody the dualities of existence, the balance of life's opposing forces, and the eternal dance of harmony in nature. The artwork invites viewers to contemplate the beauty of nature's rhythms and the delicate balance that sustains life, all through the lens of this enchanting underwater world.

    Venkat Raman Singh Shyam blue-tick

Venkat Raman Singh Shyam, a visionary artist from the Gond community, has crafted a unique artistic language that is deeply rooted in his heritage and spirituality. In his art, he finds inspiration in the Bindu, a symbol representing the supreme god, and the half-moon that surrounds it, symbolizing his village and community. These elements form the foundation of his distinctive style, a style that he believes shares common threads with the works of renowned artists like Dali and Picasso.

Venkat's artistic journey began at the tender age of ten when he began etching the world around him onto the walls of his home and whatever scraps of newspaper he could find. Born into a Gond Pardhan family in Madhya Pradesh's Sejohra village, he has dedicated the past four decades to the world of art. Under the tutelage of his late uncle, the esteemed Gond artist Jangarh Singh Shyam, Venkat learned to forge his own artistic path.

His art beautifully weaves together the rich tapestry of his clan's historical legends with contemporary perspectives of the world. Venkat's work is a testament to the fluidity of tradition and the evolving narratives that connect the past with the present. As he aptly puts it, "Change is the ultimate rule of nature and the universe." While deeply rooted in tradition and mythology, his art constantly adapts to resonate with diverse audiences, bridging the gap between ancient stories and contemporary interpretations.

    Songs of the Forests

The living traditions of Gond paintings -

In the depths of Madhya Pradesh, India, beats the heart of the Gonds- a tribe as old as time. As the community bard (singers) or Pardhan invokes their Great God- Bada Deo- while playing the Bana instrument, he fulfills the crucial task of keeping alive the legendary tales of the ancient Gond kings. Every story, song, dance, and painting brings the community together in a shared celebration of nature and the universe.

The Gond tribe has several branches or gotras, each with its own story of origin. The Pardhans, they say, are descended from the youngest of seven Gond brothers who became a priest and a storyteller on the instruction of Bada Deo.

As the ancient tribal fable unfolds in the 21st century, the gond artist’s vivid paintings narrate tales of their faiths and beliefs, world view, their visual expression and sense of identity - both as a collective , and as individuals. Vibrant colours and animated motifs filled with intricate patterns of dots and dashes bring their mythical jungle to life. Trees, animals, birds, the sky, water, and earth sway and dance to the rhythm of the Pardhan’s tunes and brush strokes.

Gond traditions and fables are a reflection of man’s close connection with his natural surroundings. The Gond painting transports you to the seamless world of the imaginative and the surprising.
