Madhubani painting, also called Mithila painting, is a folk art tradition of the Mithila region in north Bihar, sustained for centuries by women of the household who painted on the freshly plastered mud walls and floors of their homes. Characterized by complex geometrical patterns, these paintings are known for representing ritual content for particular occasions, including festivals and religious rituals. A defining principle of this tradition is the complete filling of the canvas with elaborate background texturing, ensuring that no negative space remains blank.

The artwork is the front-facing visage of Goddess Durga, rendered with impeccable symmetry against a white background. As per the Mithila tradition, her face features large, fish-shaped eyes painted in solid black ink, outlined by thick, elegantly arched eyebrows that convey a sense of calm. Resting directly in the center of her forehead is the iconic third eye (Trinetra), stylized in a large, vertical almond shape that signifies her supreme wisdom and insight. Her lips are painted a bold, festive madder red, curled into a gentle smile. A heavy traditional nath stretches from her left nostril, intricately detailed with a miniature fish pattern and fine chain that sweeps across her cheek.

The deity's hair is beautifully styled into soft waves that perfectly frame her forehead, cascading down into dense, finely textured vertical strands on either side of her neck. She wears magnificent jhumkas detailed with delicate cross-hatch shading and swinging teardrop pearls, balanced perfectly by a heavily jeweled choker necklace. Crowning her head is an elaborate crown composed of a stylized lotus flower blooming upward, its petals filled with alternating blocks of red ink and fine parallel lines (kachni).

The background beyond the central figure utilizes classic botanical elements to create a natural canopied shrine. The upper left and right corners of the painting, flanking the lotus crown, are densely packed with intertwining scrolling branches and hundreds of small, pointed leaves, each meticulously veined with precise black ink strokes. A bold black border at the edge acts as a perfect visual anchor for the intricate patterns and vibrant colors within, delivering a beautifully cohesive and authentic folk masterpiece that honors the enduring legacy of Madhubani heritage.

Domestic Orders

All prices are inclusive of GST and applicable Indian taxes.

• We offer free shipping on orders above ₹1999 for all artworks, except Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri.
• A flat shipping rate of ₹499 applies to orders below ₹1999.

Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri

Shipping is charged on a per-kilogram basis, due to the delicate and bulky nature of these items.

International Orders

• A flat shipping charge of ₹4,000 applies to international artwork orders.
• Customs duties, taxes, or import charges in the buyer’s country are not included and must be borne by the buyer.
• Shipping rates for Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri artworks will be calculated based on weight.

Additonal Shipping Charges

Extra charges may be applicable for both domestic and international deliveries in the following cases:

• If the article requires additional packaging (such as a wooden crate) to ensure safe shipping due to its delicate nature.
• Custom-framed artworks.
• Artworks where shorter side exceeds 36 inches or Decor items with any side over 35 inches.
• If you request express shipping. Contact support to check availability.
• The order contains more than two different product types.
