About Kerala's Arts and Paintings

Kerala, situated in the southwestern part of India, is a state renowned for its natural beauty and vibrant cultural traditions. Known as "God's Own Country," Kerala is celebrated for its rich heritage of arts and crafts, which reflect the state's unique blend of history, mythology, and natural surroundings.

Mural Paintings

Mural painting in Kerala dates back to the 9th century. These paintings adorned the walls of temples and palaces.

Traditionally, natural pigments are used derived from minerals and plants.

The themes are primarily religious and mythological, frequently illustrating scenes from Hindu epics and Puranas. These murals are valued for their aesthetic and spiritual significance, preserving Kerala's ancient art forms and narratives.

The state is also renowned for its wood carvings, with artisans like K.M. Raju and P. Rameshan showcasing their expertise in crafting intricately carved wooden sculptures, panels, and furniture. The use of rosewood and teakwood adds a touch of elegance to these masterpieces.
