The "Dusk till Dawn" series is a striking two-part contemporary reimagining of Pichwai by Naveen Soni, cast in a bold, contrasting palette of dusk pink and dawn blue. Pichwai painting originated over 400 years ago in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, as an intensely detailed devotional textile art traditionally hung behind temple images of Krishna.
Rooted in shared artistic heritage yet shaped by distinct creative voices, this work draws deeply from traditional motifs, symbols, and narrative systems, reinterpreting them through a contemporary visual language that is unmistakably its own, offering a fresh, living continuation of heritage rather than a fixed revival of its past forms.
The first panel unfolds across a rocky, blue mountain terrain under a golden crescent moon, where a herd of golden deer picks its way across the landscape. Strikingly, a large pink circular motif breaks into this scene, showing a section of the mountains transformed into a warm dusk blush. The second panel shifts register entirely, framing a dense, maroon tree canopy beneath a full golden moon, where the same golden deer find refuge among the branches. Mirroring the first panel, a blue crescent shape cuts into this side, showing a section of the forest cooled by the shades of the opposing palette. Through these overlapping circular cuts, the artwork asserts that the most interesting things happen in the gap between two identities—focusing not on a static object, but on the beauty of the transition itself.
What makes this set exceptional is how deliberately its symbolism is built into every brushstroke. The mountain stands in for the earth's natural architecture that has sheltered life for millennia, while the dense forest canopy is a visual essay on biodiversity. Displayed together as a pair; day and night, mountain and forest; these two paintings hold a complete story of balance, creating a disciplined cosmic order where everyday existence rests alongside a profound, constant awareness of time and transformation.
