About the Artwork +
This elaborate Pichwai painting by master artist Shehzaad Ali Sherani depicts the celebrated theme of Govardhan Puja, where Lord Krishna lifts the Govardhan Hill to protect the residents of Vrindavan from the wrath of Indra. Pichwai art is a traditional Rajasthani form, characterized by its detailed storytelling and its historical use as a sacred backdrop in temples dedicated to Shrinathji.
The composition is structured in a vertical narrative format, with the central focus on Shrinathji standing within a decorated shrine. His left arm is raised to hold up the Govardhan Hill. He is adorned in vibrant robes and pearl ornaments with lotus garlands and a peacok feather crown. By his feet are the traditional offerings - jaldani or water pot, paan beeda and a box of prasad. Flanking the central shrine are six Gopis, dressed in vibrant, patterned ghagra-cholis, shown in expressive postures of celebration and devotion with their hands raised in joy. Behind them, a lush forest of mango and banana trees stretches upward toward a deep indigo night sky filled with stars and celestial chariots carrying deities who witness the miracle.
The lower register of the painting provides a rich pastoral and architectural context. At the very bottom, a procession of white cows moves across the landscape, their bodies decorated with the traditional orange handprints, symbolising their divine connection to Krishna. Above the cows, a detailed representation of the Nathdwara temple complex is visible, showing the white-domed structures and courtyards, below which the Govardhan puja festival is shown, where the devotees make an Annakut or mountain of rice to symbolise the Govardhan mountain along with other food offerings The entire scene is anchored by a panel at the base depicting the Yamuna River, filled with blooming pink lotuses and large green leaves, and is enclosed in a decorative floral border with pink and blue motifs, completing the devotional artwork.
