This painting depicts Shri Krishna as the Divine Cowherd. It reflects his role as Govinda, the protector of cows. It depicts Shri Krishna playing his enchanted flute in a relaxed, classical tribhanga posture. He is adorned with an ornate jewelled crown and peacock feathers. The bright yellow dhoti (unstitched lower garment), and a garland of lotus buds accentuate his celestial aura. He is surrounded by numerous cows in white and blue, as they rush in to listen to his music. Each cow is adorned with bells, garlands and anklets. The presence of henna-laden hands on the bodies of the cows represents the divine touch of Shri Krishna. Two cowherds flank the composition in an attempt to herd their cows.
The background depicts a verdant expanse of banana trees, painted with golden outlines. The lush foliage envelops Krishna and the cows, creating a sacred setting for the scene. In the foreground flows the mighty Yamuna, filled with blooming lotuses and swans. Peacocks, enchanted by the divine music, are also depicted near the riverbank.
