Shehzaad Ali Sherani's exquisite Pichwai painting beautifully illustrates the sacred cows, a motif deeply intertwined with the pastimes of Lord Krishna. Originating in Rajasthan, Pichwai art traditionally serves as a revered backdrop in temples dedicated to Shrinathji, a manifestation of Bal Krishna, and is rich in symbolism.
In this piece, a tranquil herd of cows is depicted, some gracefully floating on waves while others are partially submerged. Their white forms symbolize purity, accented by saffron handprints that signify their divine connection to Krishna and his presence. Celestial beings, known as Maladhar Devs, descend from above, offering garlands to adorn these holy cows. Dressed in vibrant red and green robes with golden embellishments, these figures are rendered with the precise iconography, their angelic presence enhancing the overall composition. Overlooking the scene from the top is Lord Surya, whose visage embodies vitality, power, and knowledge, representing the ultimate source of light and life.
