About the Artwork +
This enchanting Pichwai painting by Jayesh Sharma celebrates the peacock, an iconic and romanticized symbol of divine love, beauty and natural harmony within this tradition.
Pichwai is a traditional cloth-based painting from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, traditionally created to adorn the background of the sanctuary of Shrinathji (a seven-year-old child manifestation of Krishna) and is known for its intricate detailing and rich, vivid colors.
Peacocks are deeply intertwined with the legends of Lord Krishna, representing the joyful spirit of the monsoon season in the forests of Vrindavan. According to devotional lore, when Krishna plays his divine flute, the peacocks dance in spiritual ecstasy, making them a favored subject for temple hangings designed to invoke a sense of celebration and romantic devotion (Shringara Rasa). In this particular rendition, the artist captures an intimate interaction between a pair of birds, evoking the lively wilderness of the sacred Braj region.
The composition is set against a vibrant green background that infuses the scene with a fresh atmosphere. The artwork features an elegantly rendered peacock and peahen. The peacock is depicted with a deep blue, gracefully arched neck, brown wings and a magnificent, long train that sweeps upward and backward in a dramatic curve, meticulously detailed with concentric blue, orange and gold "eyespots" (mayura-chandrika).
The peahen,on the left, is rendered in a softer tone with a brown wing and a shorter, folded train, its body elegantly curved as it gazes directly up at the larger bird in a gesture of deep connection. The pair is beautifully integrated into a stylized forest landscape that borders the central scene. Along the base, a dense patch of grass grows, punctuated by a scattering of delicate pink, blue and orange wildflowers that create a soft, natural walkway for the birds. At the left edge are the slender brown branches of a tree adorned with clusters of dark green leaves and small fruits.
The entire landscape is encased in a sophisticated border that frames the artwork and provides a formal finish. A thin, stark red line forms the inner border, separating the central green field from a wide yellow main band. This wide band features a continuous, undulating green vine adorned with small pink rosebuds and delicate green leaves. A final solid red frame bounds the entire piece, grounding the bright color palette and providing a clean, striking finish to the organic and highly detailed interior.
