Rooted in a tradition dating back to the 17th century CE, Pichwai paintings were originally large cloth backdrops for temples, depicting Lord Krishna in his revered seven-year-old child form, Shrinathji.
This brilliant composition centers on Shrinathji, surrounded by a stunning collage of his divine leelas (pastimes). The canvas is rich with detail: the serene flow of the River Yamuna and the Naukavihar (boat festival) at the top, the protective figure of Lord Vishnu in Ananta-Sheshayi with Goddess Lakshmi, and the iconic Nathdwara temple town. Below, the lush Vrindavan forest scenes come alive with Lord Krishna spending time with Radha, the Gopis, and the sacred cows.
