Uttam Chitrakar portrays the mystical world of Lord Krishna, the embodiment of divine grace and eternal love. Kalighat painting is a vibrant 19th-century Indian folk art from Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), characterized by bold lines, bright watercolors, and simplified figures, originating at the Kalighat Kali Temple as souvenirs for pilgrims but evolving to depict Hindu deities, mythology, and sharp social satire on contemporary life, with distinct styles blending traditional themes and British influences.
At the heart of this mesmerising composition stands Lord Krishna, whose form radiates an aura of enchantment and serenity. Krishna, the divine flute player, is portrayed in classic Kalighat style with his iconography consiting of dark complexion, yellow dhoti, a peacock feather and a flute, with intricate patterns adorning his attire. He stands in a dynamic pose on a lotus pedestal, symbolising purity and a reminder of his connection with the yamuna river. His vahana and loving companion, a cow stands behind him, highlighting his role as Gopala - protector of cattle or cowherd.

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
