Kalighat painting is a vibrant 19th-century Indian folk art from Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), characterized by bold lines, bright watercolors, and simplified figures, originating at the Kalighat Kali Temple as souvenirs for pilgrims but evolving to depict Hindu deities, mythology, and sharp social satire on contemporary life, with distinct styles blending traditional themes and British influences.
At the heart of this composition stands Ma Lakshmi, her divine form rendered in exquisite shades of gray. Her serene countenance exudes boundless compassion and benevolence, symbolising purity and enlightenment. Uttam Chitrakar's masterful brushwork and use of light and shadow add depth and dimension to the goddess's form, emphasising her ethereal nature. With beautiful eyes, her right hand in the abhaya mudra (gesture of fearlessness and protection), she stands with her legs crossed, the serene smile on her face touching the hearts of devotees through blessings. Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
