About the Artwork +

This elegant and beautifully stylized vertical painting by Sonali Chitrakar presents a serene rendition of Goddess Saraswati, associated with knowledge, music and the arts, seated in deep contemplation upon an open lotus blossom, showcasing a flawless command over symmetrical space. Characterized by its monumental focal figures and bold contours, the composition masterfully handles traditional sacred iconography through a vibrant folk lens.

Kalighat painting is a traditional art form that originated in the 19th century around the Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, Bengal, practiced by the Patua community. It is celebrated for its sweeping, lyrical brushstrokes, bold color fills, and a unique blend of mythological themes with satirical commentary on contemporary life. Traditionally executed with water-based pigments on paper, this style is renowned for its rapid, expressive line-work and minimalistic backgrounds that emphasize the volume and dramatic expressions of the central figures.

The composition centers around the golden-ochre complexioned deity, her head tilted gracefully to the left in a classic posture. Her cascading black hair frames her face, which is detailed with large, dramatic almond eyes, a fine nose ring, and a bright crimson bindi. She wears an elaborate multi-tiered silver crown and matching heavy filigree earrings rendered in crisp white paint lines. Her upper torso is adorned with a layered, pearl-like white necklace that cascades over a deep indigo and cream sari. The fabric of her sari wraps elegantly around her lap, detailed with alternating thick black lines and fine, hand-painted white lace borders that emphasize her seated form.

The goddess holds a monumental, straight-necked veena vertically down her center. The shaft of the instrument is rendered in warm sienna brown, while its lower, spherical resonator is decorated with two symmetric, hand-painted brown forest birds outlined in precise black ink. Flanking her form are the curved necks of two grand white swans facing outward, their bodies intricately textured with hundreds of individual golden-ochre scalloped lines that mimic layered plumage against a solid cerulean-blue backdrop. The base of the composition is anchored by a large, stylized lotus bed made of elongated, cream-colored petals outlined in sharp dark lines. The entire artwork is enclosed within a thick, striking border of alternating crimson-red and white leaf chevrons, achieving a pristine folk finish.

Ultimately, this piece stands as a masterclass in traditional rhythmic balance, using fluid contours to evoke a sense of sonic tranquility. By pairing the elegant symmetry of the sacred swans with the detailed bird motifs on the veena, Sonali Chitrakar beautifully translates the ethereal concept of cosmic music and wisdom into a structured visual masterpiece.

Kalighat

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
