The artwork captures the moment of profound grief where Lord Shiva, the destroyer, carries the lifeless body of his consort, Sati, across his shoulders. Originating in 19th-century Bengal, Kalighat art is characterized by its bold, sweeping outlines and rhythmic shading, which Uttam Chitrakar uses here to convey immense emotional and physical weight.
The central figure of Shiva is depicted with a muscular, pale-toned torso, his face marked by a somber expression and a thick mustache, reflecting his state of deep mourning. He wears a vibrant yellow tiger-skin loincloth and carries his signature trident (trishula), while his flowing hair suggests the chaotic energy of his impending Tandava dance of destruction. Draped across his back is the limp, delicate form of Sati, wearing red, her skin rendered in a contrasting warm golden hue, which emphasizes the tragic stillness of her death.
In the lower-right corner, Shiva's faithful mount, the bull Nandi, is shown in profile, looking up toward his master with a gentle, knowing gaze that adds to the narrative's solemnity. Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
