About the Artwork +

In this beautiful Kalighat painting by artist Hasir Chitrakar, an enchanting scene from Krishna’s playful leela unfolds in vivid colour and rhythm. Originating in 19th-century Bengal, Kalighat paintings are known for their bold brushwork, expressive figures, and satirical depictions of mythology, everyday life, and social themes.

The striking blue deity, flute at his lips, dominates the composition from his perch on a diagonally arching tree. Lord Krishna is adorned in a vibrant saffron-orange dhoti, a flowing ochre dupatta, and white jewelry, his serene, almond-eyed face radiating calm mischief.

Above and around him, the lush green canopy spreads with meticulously painted leaves, arranged in rhythmic clusters. Hidden among the branches are fluttering garments of the gopis painted in warm browns and ochres, hanging like stolen trophies from the divine prank.

Luminous peach-pink complexioned gopis populate the shallow waters below, their diverse poses conveying protest and longing. Their finely drawn faces, featuring red lips, arched brows, and kohled eyes, are set off by white beaded jewelry, including layered necklaces, spiral earrings, and armlets, all depicted with fine, linear strokes against their glowing skin.

The backdrop is that of a gently rippling pond, illustrated in a serene greens and greys, filled with pink lotuses, circular lily pads, and a pattern of stylized white ducks gliding across the surface in neat rows.

In this composition, Hasir Chitrakar weaves an enduring tale of Lord Krishna's charm and the spirited love of the gopis, where each color sings with purpose, and each line flows with narrative grace, making this work not just a painting, but a moment of storytelling in full bloom.
