About the Artwork +
Emerging in the 19th century CE near the Kali Temple, Kalighat painting quickly became a beloved Indian folk art tradition. Popular among both elite and common audiences, its dynamic themes range from Hindu deities and everyday life to social commentary and even controversial subjects. This vibrant Kalighat painting by Bapi Chitrakar captures a refreshing contemporary twist on traditional folk art, depicting two young men engaging in a physical fitness routine. Set against the characteristic plain backdrop that highlights the central figures, the composition centers on one man in a stretching pose—knees and hands firmly on the ground, one leg extended back, embodying focus and discipline. His expression, calm yet determined, reveals his dedication to maintaining physical well-being. Dressed in a snug dark grey t-shirt and teal shorts, adorned with white anklets and earrings, his attire seamlessly blends modernity with traditional Kalighat flair. Standing behind him is his workout partner, who supports him by holding his waist, assisting in perfecting the stretch. This figure, more grounded and confident in stance, wears an olive green t-shirt emblazoned with the word "ARMY" and khaki shorts, symbolizing strength and resilience. His neatly belted shorts and dark socks with black shoes lend a touch of urban discipline, echoing a military training setting. The figures’ stylized eyes, bold outlines, and exaggerated postures are classic Kalighat hallmarks, yet the subject—emphasizing health, camaraderie, and body care—is unmistakably modern. Bapi Chitrakar cleverly fuses past and present through this painting, portraying not just an exercise routine but a deeper sense of mutual care, brotherhood, and a growing cultural awareness around fitness and holistic well-being among today’s youth. This piece stands as a vibrant commentary on evolving masculinity and community strength within a modern Indian context.
