Banjara embroidery is a traditional craft of the nomadic Banjara community, a tribe that is found in various states across India. The craft is known for its use of colorful threads, patchwork, and embellishments.
This artwork by Sapavat Siddu is a detailed and beautiful example of Banjara embroidery. The piece is a vertical, rectangular textile with a vibrant and intricate grid-like pattern. The central section is a prominent grid of eight main panels, arranged in two vertical columns. The color palette is dominated by deep reds, oranges, and yellows, with accents of white, black, and multi-colored threads. Each of the eight panels contains a unique geometric motif, primarily consisting of concentric squares and braided cross-like patterns.
The entire central section is framed by a series of borders. The inner border is a rich red, while the outer borders feature repeating chevron or arrow-like patterns in a variety of colors, as well as a vertical strip of smaller, multi-colored squares. The rustic, tactile quality of the threads creates a raised surface, giving the piece a rich texture and depth. The raw threaded edges on all four sides add to the folk art aesthetic. This piece beautifully showcases the Banjara's mastery of color and geometric patterns, creating a vibrant and lively composition.
