This beautiful Gond painting by Saroj Venkat Shyam depicts a tribal woman as a cowherd. Originating in the tribal Gond community, which lives in close communion with nature, these paintings portray a strong belief that every aspect of nature is animate and sacred. At the centre of the composition is the tribal woman, with cows and peafowl around her. She is depicted in a folk style, adorned in ethnic tribal dressing with a kurti, skirt, barefoot, with a leafy crown.
The lines are used in such a way that they convey a sense of motion and movement to the images. Animals entwined with the trees and branches, often merging, are used to depict the interdependence of the plants and animals.
This monochrome artwork reflects the Gond worldview of interconnectedness between all aspects of nature - flora, fauna and human existence with the divine. A testament to the traditional knowledge and artistic legacy of the Gond community, this piece is a spiritual and harmonious addition to any space.
