This unique artwork presents Vishnumurthi and the story of Dashavatharam, illustrating the journey of how the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu manifested and evolved through different stages. The narrative is brought to life through a beautiful combination of traditional Cheriyal painting by Sravan Kumar and three-dimensional Kondapally dolls. Each of the Dashavatharam figures is handcrafted in the traditional Kondapally art form and integrated into the painted composition, creating a distinctive three-dimensional storytelling experience on an extended vertical panel.
Cheriyal painting is a traditional narrative art form from Telangana, historically created by the Nakashi community, hereditary painters who produced long scrolls to accompany travelling storytellers. Mythological stories, epics, and religious narratives were presented through strongly outlined figures, vivid colours, and sequential scenes.
In the upper-middle section of the scroll, Vishnu is depicted reclining upon Anant Shesha, with Brahma emerging from his navel on a lotus and Lakshmi attending at his feet. This cosmic image connects the sequence of avatars to Vishnu’s supreme divine form, with Lakshmi performing seva while holding a fan to reinforce the devotional character of the scene.
Read from top to bottom, the panel moves through the evolutionary stages of Vishnu’s avatars:
At the very top is Matsya, the fish avatar. The handcrafted Kondapally wooden doll combines a human upper body with a fish body, mounted alongside a painted scene depicting a boat carrying Manu and figures across cosmic waters.
Below Matsya is Kurma, the tortoise avatar, similarly mounted as a Kondapally wooden figure over a painted scene of the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean), showing Mount Mandara supported on Kurma's shell.
The next section depicts Varaha, the boar avatar. The relief doll features a human body with a boar head, set against a vibrant painted narrative of Varaha lifting the Earth goddess Bhudevi from the ocean.
This is followed by Narasimha, the man-lion avatar. The Kondapally wooden figure depicts his fierce form, while the painted backdrop shows Narasimha emerging from the pillar to protect Prahlada and vanquish Hiranyakashipu.
Further down is Vamana, the dwarf avatar. Mounted as a wooden doll carrying an umbrella, the figure is set within a painted narrative depicting King Bali, Shukracharya, and Vamana’s cosmic strides.
The sequence continues with Parashurama, represented as a handcrafted wooden warrior figure set within a painted scene of conflict with the Kshatriyas.
Below him is Rama, where the Kondapally doll is mounted alongside a painted depiction of the wedding of Rama and Sita from the Ramayana.
The following section features Balarama, depicted as a wooden doll within a pastoral painted narrative alongside Krishna, illustrating the mythological world of the two brothers.
Krishna appears further below, mounted as a blue wooden deity alongside painted scenes depicting Krishna and Arjuna on the battlefield, evoking the imparting of the Bhagavad Gita.
At the very bottom is Kalki, the final avatar. Mounted as a wooden figure, he is accompanied by painted depictions of a white horse, symbolizing the future manifestation associated with the end of the present age.
Throughout the panel, the three-dimensional Kondapally wooden dolls stand out against the vivid background panels, which shift between light green, deep red, and sky blue. The harmony between traditional Cheriyal surface painting by Sravan Kumar and Kondapally wood carving creates a continuous visual and tactile narrative of Vishnu’s cosmic journey.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.

Returns and Replacements
