This unique Cheriyal artwork by Sravan Kumar presents Vishnumurthi at the centre, surrounded by the Dashavatharam beautifully crafted on traditional handmade shells. The entire composition is executed with natural colours on a circular wooden panel, combining flat surface painting with relief elements.
Cheriyal painting is a traditional narrative art form from Telangana, historically created by the Nakashi community - hereditary painters who produced scroll paintings to accompany travelling storytellers. Known for its bold colours, expressive figures, and decorative line work, the craft brings mythological episodes into vibrant visual form.
At the centre of the circular composition, Lord Vishnu is depicted reclining in a relaxed posture upon the coiled body of Sheshanag, the cosmic serpent. His multiple hoods rise behind Vishnu in a protective canopy, while his woven coils form a seat beneath the deity. Vishnu is rendered in celestial blue, with his face turn towards the viewer. His large eyes, prominent nose, and broad lips are defined with clean linear detailing, with a white urdhva-pundra tilak marking his forehead.
Vishnu has four arms and carries his characteristic attributes, including the shankha (conch) and the Sudarshana Chakra (discus). He wears a yellow dhoti decorated with a green checkered pattern, along with a mukut, layered necklaces, armlets, bangles, and anklets. Near Vishnu’s feet, Goddess Lakshmi is shown engaged in seva, wearing a green saree and fine jewellery while attending to the deity. Another female attendant appears beside them, holding a fan in divine service. Emerging above Vishnu is Lord Brahma, seated upon a lotus arising from Vishnu’s navel, recalling the Vaishnava narrative of creation. The lower portion of the central circle depicts pale blue cosmic waters populated by fish, conch shells, and aquatic plants.
Surrounding the central scene are the ten principal avatars of Vishnu (Dashavatara), painted upon three-dimensional, egg-shaped handmade shells. These Dashavatharam shells are created using a traditional mixture of tamarind seed paste and sawdust, giving the artwork its distinctive handcrafted character and relief texture. Beginning with Matsya (the fish avatar), the sequence continues through Kurma (tortoise), Varaha (boar), Narasimha (man-lion), Vamana (dwarf avatar holding an umbrella), Parashurama with his axe, Rama with his bow, Balarama, Krishna with his flute, and Kalki mounted on a white horse.
Each avatar shell is painted in a distinct background colour, blue, green, orange, purple and brown, creating a rhythmic ring around the central medallion. The deep red background of the wooden circular panel is filled with subtle green trailing vines and small white and yellow floral motifs, connecting the individual avatar shells into a unified visual narrative.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.

Returns and Replacements
We offer replacements or repairs if your artwork arrives damaged or has a quality issue. As each artwork is handcrafted, we do not accept returns or refunds for orders received in the expected condition.
