Origin of Cheriyal Scroll Painting
Cheriyal Scroll Painting originated in the village of Cheriyal in present-day Telangana and has been practiced for centuries by the Nakashi community of artisans. Traditionally, these painted scrolls were commissioned by itinerant storytellers, known as Kaki Padagollu and other bardic communities, who used them as visual aids while narrating stories from Indian epics, Puranas, local folklore and the histories of various occupational castes.
Evolution of Cheriyal Scroll Painting
Over time, Cheriyal Scroll Painting evolved from large narrative scrolls created for oral storytelling into smaller, standalone artworks suited for contemporary audiences. As traditional storytelling practices declined, artisans adapted the art form to new mediums such as framed paintings, masks, decorative panels and handcrafted objects, ensuring the survival of this unique cultural tradition while retaining its distinctive folk aesthetic.

Mythology and Sacred Epics

How Cheriyal Scroll Painting is Made
Cheriyal Scroll Paintings begin with the preparation of a specially treated cotton cloth, coated with layers of natural paste made from materials such as tamarind seed gum, rice starch, white clay and powdered limestone to create a smooth painting surface. The artist then sketches the narrative freehand before outlining the figures in bold black. Flat areas of vibrant colour are applied, followed by intricate details that define the characters, costumes, ornaments and expressions.
