This intricate and ritualistic artwork is a Mata Ni Pachedi painting by artist Sumit Chittara, depicting the Tree of Life, a sacred symbol of fertility and divine providence within the Mother Goddess's realm.
This art form, originating in Gujarat, is typically defined by its narrative focus on the Goddess and its use of a limited, natural color palette, here using black outlines on a background washed with a pinkish-ochre dye. The composition is dominated by a majestic central tree whose branches and fine, leaf-like detailing fill nearly the entire square frame.
At the base, two stylized fish are depicted, symbolizing fertility and the source of life, while the surrounding area includes winged celestial figures known to be Paris, in the upper corners, act as guardians and messengers. The entire scene is enclosed within a stark black border featuring a repeating chevron pattern.
This painting beautifully showcases the meticulous freehand drawing and ornamental patterning of the Mata Ni Pachedi tradition, celebrating the sanctity of nature as an extension of the Goddess's power.

Returns and Replacements
We offer replacements or repairs if your artwork arrives damaged or has a quality issue. As each artwork is handcrafted, we do not accept returns or refunds for orders received in the expected condition.
Delivery Timeline
Ready To Ship/In Stock artworks are shipped in 3-4 days. We only accept return requests for Ready to Ship/In stock artworks placed within a week from date of delivery. However, no returns can be accepted for international deliveries.

Mata ni Pachedi is a traditional folk art form from Gujarat, India, created by the nomadic Vaghari community, known for its vibrant depictions of Hindu goddesses, particularly the mother goddess, Mata. Literally translating to "behind the goddess," these artworks were traditionally used as backdrops in shrines, evolving from portable shrines created by the marginalized Vaghari community who were denied temple entry. Characterized by bold, dynamic compositions with the goddess at the center, surrounded by devotees and symbolic animals, the art uses an earthy palette of black, red, and white, symbolizing protection, strength, and purity, respectively. It is traditionally created on cotton cloth using natural dyes, with outlines drawn using a bamboo stick dipped in black dye made from jaggery and iron, and colors filled in from natural sources like turmeric and indigo. This labor-intensive process results in intricate designs and patterns, making Mata ni Pachedi a profound expression of devotion, a testament to the Vaghari community's resilience, and an important part of India's cultural heritage.
