These stunning Satara masks, handcrafted by Sai Kiran, showcases the rich tradition of Telangana’s Cheriyal art. The word Satara is an acronym for Sattvik, Tamsik and Rajsik, where each colour signifies one of the three rasas of emotions. As a counterpart of the Cheriyal Scroll painting, these masks have been utilised as important props in India's historical story telling tradition. Representing the characters of the local folklores, these masks accompanied the wandering story tellers to narrate the stories in Jataras or village fairs. These masks uniquely portray feminine characters through vibrant colors and intricate details. The warm yellow Satara Mask, representing Sattvik, embodies tranquility and fulfillment. Its softer, serene expression, complemented by delicate floral cheek designs and a traditional nose ring, underscores its elegance and the importance of balance. The green mask, symbolizing Rajasik, highlights the vices of materialism. This is strikingly portrayed through a mysterious charm, featuring bold red lips, floral embellishments, and a regal yet enigmatic golden-yellow headdress. The striking red mask signifies Tamsik, conveying the negative consequences of dwelling in darkness. Its sharp, semi-arched eyebrows and wide, expressive eyes draw the viewer in. All three masks are beautifully decorated with traditional jewelry motifs, intricate patterns, and distinct facial expressions, highlighting the nuanced storytelling of Cheriyal art and the notions of introspection, self-discovery, and righteousness. These Satara masks, with their rich textures, bold brushstrokes, and distinctive colors, embody Telangana's deep-rooted cultural heritage, where Cheriyal art has enriched storytelling for centuries. Handcrafted with natural materials and organic pigments in Cheriyal village (Medak district, Telangana), these masks showcase the artistic brilliance and enduring legacy of this tradition. Sai Kiran's vibrant artistry and meticulous craftsmanship bring these masks to life, making them treasured additions to any collection of Indian folk art. Cheriyal masks are in protected with Poochampalli fabric.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
