About the Artwork +
This exceptionally compact and visually striking Gond painting by Manoj Tekam captures a tight, overlapping cluster of five sacred elephants. The artwork is a masterclass in pattern variation, utilizing complex internal textures to define form and familial movement.
Gond painting is a vibrant tribal art form from Madhya Pradesh, practiced by the Gond community. It is celebrated for its intricate geometric patterns, bold colors and deep connection to nature. Traditionally used to decorate village mud walls, the art has evolved into a globally recognized style. Rather than applying a uniform fill, the artist uses his signature texture variations to separate the limbs and bodies of the overlapping herd.
The two dominant elephants in the center feature heavy, volumetric backs completely textured with Gehu ke baal (wheat spikes), rendered as repeating rows of tightly nested concentric loops in green and yellow. In sharp contrast, their faces and long trunks are meticulously stippled with thousands of tiny, ink-drawn dots representing Sarson ke daane (mustard seeds). The surrounding three monochromatic elephants break away from these agricultural textures, using fine fish-scale lines and parallel hatching across their flanks. The entire composition showcases how tribal textures can define structure and weight without relying on shading.
The mixture of the monochromatic color palette with vibrant pinks, blues, greens and yellows captures the attention of the viewer. This composition depicts the interconnectedness between the forest and its beings, reflecting on the Gond worldview of harmonious co-existence.
