This Gond painting by Manoj Tekam is a rhythmic and highly patterned study of two roosters, capturing a moment of animated interaction between the pair. Gond art is a traditional tribal form from Madhya Pradesh that translates the spiritual connection between nature and the community into a complex visual language of dots and lines. The composition features the two roosters with their heads turned towards one another, their prominent combs and wattles clearly identifying them.
Each section of the roosters' bodies—from the elongated, curving necks to the sturdy legs—is treated as a separate canvas for repetitive geometric and organic motifs. Fine, hatch-like strokes simulate the layering of feathers, while swirling patterns on the wings suggest the underlying muscle and movement of the birds. Three sIgnature patterns of the artist are proudly shown in the artwork - Sarson ke daane (mustard seeds), Gehu ke baal (wheat spikes), and Beni (braid).
The artist utilizes a sophisticated, near-monochromatic palette, relying on bold black ink against a crisp white background. Subtle blue accents are strategically placed at the tips of the wing and tail feathers to add a sense of depth, while the vibrant yellow eyes serve as the focal point, imbuing the roosters with a watchful, lifelike energy. By combining these traditional tribal patterns with recognizable avian forms, Manoj Tekam creates a work that is both a tribute to village life and a masterful display of contemporary Gond aesthetics.
