This hand-carved and painted wooden mask depicts Mahākāla, one of the principal wrathful protector deities of Himalayan Buddhism, rendered here in his fierce red-faced form crowned with five human skulls. The mask is compact and boldly modelled, its features carved in high relief and finished with a glossy lacquer that heightens the intensity of its colouring.
Traditional Himalayan Buddhist masks are sacred, hand-carved or painted ritual art pieces used primarily in monastery ceremonies, meditative dances, and spiritual home protection.
Mahākāla's face is painted red, with thick black brows swept upward into curling tips that frame two wide, staring eyes rendered in red, black, and gold. A raised third eye sits at the centre of the forehead, marked by a small circular boss. The mouth is carved open in a snarl, its interior painted a vivid coral-pink and lined with sharp white fangs, two of which curve prominently downward past the lower lip. Dark green detailing traces the cheeks and jawline, adding to the mask's fierce, heated expression. Crowning the head is a band of five carved skulls in bone-white, each with hollow black eye sockets, set into a green crown that circles the top of the mask, while curling orange ear ornaments flank either side of the face.
The crown of five skulls is a specific and significant iconographic marker, traditionally understood to represent the transmutation of the five poisons, ignorance, attachment, aversion, pride, and jealousy, into the five wisdoms through the deity's wrathful, transformative power. As with other wrathful protector imagery in the Himalayan Buddhist tradition, Mahākāla's terrifying appearance is not meant to frighten but to represent the destruction of obstacles and ignorance, with masks of this kind traditionally worn during ritual cham dances performed by monks to enact this protective, purifying role.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.

Returns and Replacements
We offer replacements or repairs if your artwork arrives damaged or has a quality issue. As each artwork is handcrafted, we do not accept returns or refunds for orders received in the expected condition.
Delivery Timeline
Ready To Ship/In Stock artworks are shipped in 3-4 days. We only accept return requests for Ready to Ship/In stock artworks placed within a week from date of delivery. However, no returns can be accepted for international deliveries.
Once your order is placed, our team stays in constant communication with the artist to track the progress and ensure the quality of your order. You will receive regular updates from us throughout this process.
All MeMeraki artworks are hand-painted. In rare occasions, artist may face delays due to weather, health, prior commitments or force majeure. Our team will reach out to you with revised timelines in case of such delays. We appreciate your understanding and patience in such situations.
