About the Artwork +

Devi stands as calm as stillwater. She notices strange fluid and distortion while performing the last step of the SBE. A petrifying omen, she finds herself on a long road of war and recovery. The stillness in her composure prepares her for what’s coming next, and her sombre eyes gather courage to prepare for battle.

These are stories of real breast cancer survivors. Your purchase will help provide financial assistance for the treatment of underprivileged cancer patients. 100% of the proceeds will go to The Apollo Cancer Foundation (ACF). Read Devi’s complete story here.

Note: All of these artworks are available with frames and the quoted price is inclusive of the frame.

Devi

Ninja on a quest

Devi, the human machine.

The proud domestic help of six homes.

She slips in and out of houses,

Like a ninja on a quest.

Her hands move like blades,

Cutting vegetables into heaps.

She glides through houses,

dusting, sweeping and mopping.

“My son should study, Akka,” she says,

As I watch her wash vessels in haste.

She doesn’t want her son to suffer,

Or end up a porter like his father.

She works six houses, day after day after day.

She hasn’t taken a leave in the past five years.

And then, one day, she calls in sick.

“Akka, something’s wrong with my breast,

Blood is oozing out of the nipples,” she says.

I look up what it means,

“Sign of breast cancer,” the net says.

I almost cry as I tell her the news.

“It’s ok, Akka. Life has never been kind,”

“I’ve seen things worse than this.” Devi shrugs.

I look at her determined face, and I know,

Without much ado, she’ll conquer this too.

It has been twelve years since.

Devi hasn’t just survived but thrived.

Her son has finished college and got a job.

He got married and bought a house too.

Still, Devi comes in for work every day.

“You saved my life, Akka,” Devi often says,

“No. Your courage saved you,” I reply.

A proud smile sprouts on her face.

She gets back to cutting vegetables,

Just like a Ninja on a quest.

"Step 8 – Look for nipple distortion, retraction, and fluid discharge."

Kerala Mural

Kerala mural art is a traditional form of painting that originated in the southern Indian state of Kerala. Rooted in religious narratives, Kerala mural art has evolved over centuries to become a celebrated cultural heritage of India. History and Tradition The history of Kerala mural art can be traced back to the ancient temples and palaces of Kerala, where these magnificent paintings adorned the walls as expressions of devotion and artistic excellence. Dating back to as early as the 9th century CE, Kerala murals can be seen in places like Thirunadhikkara cave, Vaikom temple, Padmanabhaswamy temple etc.  Themes Generally, Kerala mural paintings are inspired by Hindu mythology, depicting scenes from the epics Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas. These paintings often portray gods, goddesses, celestial beings, and mythological creatures in elaborate detail, conveying stories of love, valor, and divine intervention reflecting the rich tapestry of Indian mythology and spirituality. Techniques and Details Kerala mural art is characterized by meticulous attention to detail, vibrant colors, and beautiful compositions. At first, artists prepare the wall with layers of lime and sand mixture. Natural pigments derived from minerals, plants, and metals, are used to draw outlines and later fill the colors, using brushes made from natural fibers. Artists skillfully incorporate architectural features such as pillars, arches, and doorways into their compositions, creating a sense of depth and dimensionality. The paintings are often adorned with decorative motifs and geometric patterns, adding to their visual appeal.
