About the Artwork +

Harinathji showcases a captivating Kalamkari painting; the epic tale of Ram and Seetha unfurls with its vibrant colours and intricate details. At the centre of the canvas, the divine couple, Lord Ram and Seetha, are seated in all their regal grace. Surrounding them, the artist masterfully depicts Ram's devoted brothers, Lakshman, Bharat, and Shatrughna. At Ram's feet, Hanuman, the beloved devotee and faithful ally, kneels with reverence. Surrounding Ram and Seetha, the artist weaves a gallery of characters from the Ramayana, each depicting significant moments from their epic journey. The background of the painting becomes an intricately detailed tapestry of tales that recount the legendary encounters between Ram, Hanuman, and the various characters of the Ramayana. The painting further narrates the heroic encounter between Hanuman and Ravana, where the powerful demon king is left in awe of Hanuman's indomitable spirit and devotion to Ram. The painting serves as a mesmerising reminder of their timeless saga and the unwavering loyalty of Hanuman, whose selfless devotion continues to inspire hearts and minds for generations to come.

Kalamkari

Kalamkari is an ancient Indian art form of painting or printing on fabric using natural dyes and intricate penwork, with its name literally meaning 'craftwork done with a pen'. Flourishing under the Mughals and later the Golconda and Coromandel Sultanates, its prominent centers are Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. This art form traditionally depicts Hindu mythological epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana, featuring deities and common occurrences, characterized by rounded faces, large eyes, and detailed costumes. Legend connects its origin to Radha teaching the art in Machilipatnam and its use on Hanuman's flag. The meticulous technique involves preparing cotton or silk fabric, outlining designs with a 'kalam' (bamboo or palm stick dipped in fermented jaggery and water) acting as a natural mordant, and then filling in patterns with natural dyes from plants, roots, and minerals. Authentic Kalamkari is identified by hand-drawn or block-printed designs, natural dyes, traditional patterns, and slight imperfections, with motifs often inspired by nature, mythology, and folklore, each carrying cultural and symbolic significance. Harinath N, Sudheerji, and Siva Reddy are notable master artists of this intricate and time-consuming art.
