This striking Warli artwork by Krushna Sadashiv Bhusare places a single, magnificent tree of life at the centre of its composition, its round canopy filling the sky like a second sun, with the whole of village life gathered at its roots.
Warli painting is a traditional tribal art form from Maharashtra, India, developed over generations by the Warli people of the state's Sahyadri hill country. Built from a spare visual vocabulary of circles, triangles and squares, drawn respectively from the sun and moon, mountains and trees, and sacred enclosures, the tradition was originally practised with a white rice-paste mixture applied with a bamboo stick onto walls prepared with red-brown mud and cow dung. Its recurring themes, gods and goddesses, the harvest, the animal world and the community's rituals, are united by an underlying reverence for nature as a living, sacred presence. Krushna Sadashiv Bhusare works within this tradition, carrying its wall-painting discipline onto canvas while preserving its essential visual grammar.
Rendered here against an unusually dark, near-black ground, the tree rises from a thick white trunk into a vast, densely worked circular canopy built from countless fine branching lines, giving the crown a shimmering, textured fullness quite distinct from the more sparsely drawn trees seen elsewhere in the tradition. A peacock is perched among the lower branches, its long tail cascading downward, while a small squirrel climbs the trunk above it. Rows of birds fly in orderly ranks across the sky on either side of the canopy, with the sun placed in the upper left corner and a crescent moon in the upper right. Below, the tree's white roots spread wide into the earth forming a mound, and around its base an entire Warli settlement has been rendered in miniature, huts with pitched roofs, fields of standing crops, grazing cattle, a bullock cart, and long chains of dancing figures linking hands, all encircling the tree as the fixed centre of their world.
Trees hold a place of particular reverence in Warli belief, understood not as scenery but as living, spirited beings woven into the same sacred fabric as the tribe's rivers, mountains and animal deities. A great tree such as this, anchoring the sky above to the roots below and sheltering birds, animals and villagers alike within a single continuous form, embodies the Warli understanding of nature as the source and sustaining centre of communal life, every human activity shown here, farming, herding, dancing, unfolding in direct relationship to it rather than apart from it.
By setting the whole rhythm of village life in orbit around this single, radiant tree, Krushna Sadashiv Bhusare gives visual form to a worldview in which nature is not a backdrop to human activity but its living, sheltering centre. The result is one of the most quietly powerful images in the Warli repertoire, a tree that is at once a portrait of a single living thing and a map of an entire community's dependence upon it.
