This striking square textile panel showcases Jat Dhaneta embroidery, a legendary craft of the pastoral Jat community of Kutch, celebrated for its dense, vibrant execution, bold geometric arrangements and exquisite mirror-work. Through an incredibly rich and complex composition organized into distinct vertical fields, the piece beautifully captures the nomadic heritage and detailed artistry of the Jat community.
Jat Dhaneta is one of the four major embroidery styles practiced by the specific subgroups of the Kutchi Jat community. Traditionally rendered on the yokes of structural garments, the art form is defined by its solid, sturdy appearance and intensely textured surface. The style is uniquely recognized by geometric and abstract motifs built upon a foundational grid, characterized by two distinctive features, a tiny mirror embedded directly at the center of each motif, and highly structured, radiating lines that flow within the designs and all over the composition.
The central composition features a dynamic layout split into two primary design zones. The left half of the panel is populated by a cluster of large, radiant circular wheels and smaller discs, each divided into wedge-like segments of cream, orange, maroon and pink thread.
The right half transitions into structured vertical columns filled with a variety of classic motifs, including a prominent row of square-framed circular mirrors (abhla) held by heavy buttonhole stitching, interlocking orange and maroon zig-zag chevrons and thin bands of cross-hatched shapes.
A transitional column of similarly embroidered semicircles bridges the linear rigidity of the section on the right with the circular momentum of the one on the left. Additionally, the panel is enclosed on both sides by matching borders featuring sharp, repetitive triangles outlined in cream thread.
A hallmark feature of the Jat-Daaneta style is the brilliant incorporation of tiny, circular mirrors (abla) at the core of its abstract structures. These mirrors are held in place by exceptionally tight needlework, stitched precisely so that the maximum possible surface area of each mirror is exposed to catch the light.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
