This monumental Tholu Bommalata artwork by Sindhe Siva depicts Yuddha Rama, Rama in his formidable battle form during the war of Lanka, rendered through the traditional shadow puppetry of Andhra Pradesh in a form that radiates cosmic authority and supreme martial power. As the central hero of the Ramayana engaged in the ultimate conflict between dharma and adharma, this war-ready depiction of Rama holds a supreme and decisive place of significance within the artform's traditional repertoire.
Tholu Bommalata, the "dance of leather puppets" is a shadow theatre tradition of the Telugu-speaking Deccan with a history reaching back some two thousand years. Its performances are historically drawn from a Telugu version of the Ramayana compiled for the shadow stage, alongside episodes from the Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana. Puppets are cut from goat, deer or buffalo hide, cleaned and treated over roughly two weeks until translucent, then hand-painted with natural dyes and finely perforated so that, held before a lit screen, each figure glows as a vivid, coloured shadow.
Rama is depicted in profile with his iconographic blue-toned complexion, his expression serene yet unflinchingly resolute. Clad for combat, he wears a bright orange kurta patterned with fine white dotted grids, accented by a draped shawl and layered gold-toned armor across his chest and waist. His lower attire consists of a yellow dhoti decorated with orange stripes and fine dotted grid work, leading down to black shoes trimmed with red borders and white dotted accents.
His head is adorned with an elaborate multi-tiered kirita crown in red, gold and white, complemented by circular ear ornaments and detailed necklaces. In his hand, Rama holds a curved sword vertically, while his other hand draws his legendary bow to release a breathtaking, semi-circular fan of arrows, a magnificent volley of divine astras rendered with complex circular perforations and tips that radiate outward like a blazing sunburst of celestial light. A quiver stacked with additional arrows rests upon his back, completing his martial readiness.
As the heroic climax of the epic narrative around which the entire performance tradition of Tholu Bommalata revolves, this artwork captures Yuddha Rama with the towering dignity and radiant martial majesty his character demands. Sindhe Siva's rendering brings together the full expressive capacity of the craft, its brilliant natural pigments, intricate lace-like perforation work and spectacular combat iconography, to honor the ultimate triumph of dharma.
