This Madhubani painting by Pratima Bharti is an exquisite example of the Katchni style, focusing on the divine union of Ram and Sita. In the Mithila tradition, the story of Ram and Sita is not only a foundational epic but also a deeply personal narrative, as Janakpur (Sita’s birthplace) is considered part of the cultural heartland where Madhubani art originated.
The composition centers on Ram and Sita standing in a moment of sacred connection, likely depicting a scene from their wedding or their life in the forest. Ram, on the left, is identified by his noble stature and traditional warrior's attire, while Sita, on the right, is rendered with grace and devotion. Both figures feature the characteristic large, almond-shaped eyes that are a hallmark of Bharti’s work. Their garments are a marvel of fine monochromatic linework, filled with repetitive geometric patterns, zig-zags, and delicate cross-hatching that give the flat paper a sense of rich, textile-like texture.
The couple is placed beneath a stylized canopy of a lush tree, whose branches arch over them like a protective umbrella. At the very top, a large, blooming lotus or sun-like motif radiates outward, symbolizing divine blessing and the auspiciousness of their union. The background is a dense thicket of leaves and intertwining branches, ensuring that every inch of the space is vibrating with life—a traditional technique used to signify that the divine presence permeates all of nature.
Pratima Bharti utilizes the Katchni technique to its fullest potential here, relying on the precision of the line rather than a wide palette of colors to convey emotion and depth. The subtle use of red accents in the jewelry and borders adds just enough warmth to highlight the ceremonial nature of the scene. The entire work is enclosed within a sophisticated border of repeated triangular and floral motifs, anchoring this timeless narrative of love and dharma into a singular, balanced vision.

Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance. Traditionally created by women on walls and floors during auspicious occasions, these paintings depict Hindu mythology, nature, folklore, and daily life, often incorporating Hindu deities, scenes from epics, and natural motifs like flowers and animals. Legend suggests its origins trace back to King Janak's commission for Sita's wedding. Artists traditionally use natural pigments from plants and minerals, applied with homemade bamboo and cotton brushes, filling the entire surface with fine detail. While some contemporary artists use synthetic paints, many maintain traditional methods. The art form gained international recognition in the 1960s and has since expanded to various mediums beyond walls, including canvases and textiles. Distinct styles like Kachni (line art), Bharni (filling art), Godna (tattoo art), Tantrik (spiritual), and Kohbar (marriage rituals) exist, each with unique characteristics.
