This Madhubani painting by Pratima Bharti is a vibrant representation of Lord Ganesha in the Bharni style, which is characterized by the use of bold, saturated colors to fill the forms. In this rendition, the auspicious deity is depicted in a standing posture, his presence radiating a sense of joy and divine energy.
The figure of Ganesha is the central focus, framed by a delicate arch decorated with floral motifs. His skin is rendered in a warm, earthy orange, contrasting beautifully with his bright blue tunic. The artist has paid meticulous attention to his attire; the lower dhoti is a tapestry of orange and white stripes, further embellished with small, black star-like patterns. This rhythmic repetition of shapes is a signature of the Mithila tradition, grounding the divine figure in a world of structured beauty.
Ganesha’s face features the large, iconic almond-shaped eyes that are central to Madhubani iconography. His trunk is adorned with fine, feathered linework while his four arms represent his omnipresence, omnipotence, and the four inner components of human subtle body/consciousness: mind (manas), intellect (buddhi), ego (ahankara), and conditioned consciousness (chitta). The sacred swastika symbol is visible on his ears, signifying prosperity and good fortune.
The entire composition is contained within a bold orange border, which acts as a window into this spiritual space. By combining the high-contrast palette of the Bharni style with precise decorative details, Bharti captures Ganesha as the "remover of obstacles" in a way that is both traditionally rooted and visually striking.

Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance. Traditionally created by women on walls and floors during auspicious occasions, these paintings depict Hindu mythology, nature, folklore, and daily life, often incorporating Hindu deities, scenes from epics, and natural motifs like flowers and animals. Legend suggests its origins trace back to King Janak's commission for Sita's wedding. Artists traditionally use natural pigments from plants and minerals, applied with homemade bamboo and cotton brushes, filling the entire surface with fine detail. While some contemporary artists use synthetic paints, many maintain traditional methods. The art form gained international recognition in the 1960s and has since expanded to various mediums beyond walls, including canvases and textiles. Distinct styles like Kachni (line art), Bharni (filling art), Godna (tattoo art), Tantrik (spiritual), and Kohbar (marriage rituals) exist, each with unique characteristics.
