About the Artwork +

This Madhubani painting by Pratima Bharti is a vibrant exploration of the Bharni style, skillfully divided into two distinct horizontal registers that celebrate the abundance of the natural world. In the Mithila tradition, both the peacock and the fish are potent symbols—the peacock representing romance and the celebration of life, while the fish symbolizes fertility, prosperity, and the life-giving energy of water.

The upper register features a majestic peacock perched among stylized branches, its train fully fanned in a magnificent display. The bird is rendered with deep blues and purples, its feathers decorated with intricate "eyes" that create a rhythmic, radiating pattern. The background is a warm, mustard yellow, which provides a striking contrast to the cool tones of the bird’s plumage. The fine linework and dense color fills are hallmarks of the Bharni technique, giving the figure a sense of spiritual vibration and regal presence.

The lower register depicts two large fish swimming in a lush, aquatic environment. These figures are oriented diagonally, suggesting fluid motion through the lime-green water. Their bodies are filled with delicate, monochromatic scales and fine linear hatching (Kachni), while their large, expressive eyes are a characteristic feature of Pratima Bharti's hand. A semi-circular border with scalloped detailing separates the two realms, creating a structured yet organic narrative of terrestrial and aquatic harmony. The entire work is enclosed within a bold orange and black border, anchoring the dynamic energy of the motifs into a singular, sacred vision of the cosmos.

      Madhubani

Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance. Traditionally created by women on walls and floors during auspicious occasions, these paintings depict Hindu mythology, nature, folklore, and daily life, often incorporating Hindu deities, scenes from epics, and natural motifs like flowers and animals. Legend suggests its origins trace back to King Janak's commission for Sita's wedding. Artists traditionally use natural pigments from plants and minerals, applied with homemade bamboo and cotton brushes, filling the entire surface with fine detail. While some contemporary artists use synthetic paints, many maintain traditional methods. The art form gained international recognition in the 1960s and has since expanded to various mediums beyond walls, including canvases and textiles. Distinct styles like Kachni (line art), Bharni (filling art), Godna (tattoo art), Tantrik (spiritual), and Kohbar (marriage rituals) exist, each with unique characteristics. Madhubani art holds immense cultural, social, and religious importance, preserving stories, providing livelihood for women artists, and serving as a vibrant expression of India's rich heritage.
