About the Artwork +

This mesmerizing piece of Gond art by Manoj Tekam invites viewers into a fantastical world where nature's simplicity and complexity intertwine. At the heart of this artwork lies a singular, enchanting tree, its vibrant red fruit bursting with life and vitality. The tree's trunk and branches are meticulously adorned with intricate patterns, showcasing the artist's painstaking attention to detail and his deep reverence for the natural world. The tree's branches extend outwards, each one diverging into a tapestry of leaves expressed through meticulous cross-hatching. This technique lends a sense of depth and texture, as if the leaves are swaying gently in an unseen breeze. The upper portion features leaves in light green, suggesting new growth and freshness, while the lower section is filled with darker, denser foliage, symbolizing maturity and richness.

Tekam employs a rich palette of earthy tones, dominated by varying shades of brown, red, and green, that harmonize to create a serene yet dynamic visual experience. The contrast between the vibrant red fruits and the more subdued, intricate patterns of leaves and branches draws the eye and invites closer inspection and appreciation of the subtle intricacies. The base of the tree transitions seamlessly into a realm of darker, intricate patterns, merging the elements of the earth and sky in a symbiotic dance. This organic relationship encapsulates the essence of Gond art, which traditionally celebrates the interaction between living beings and their environment.

Manoj Tekam's work is not merely a depiction of a tree; it is a celebration of life, growth, and the enduring bond between nature and humanity. Each stroke and dot is a testament to the artist's skill and his ability to convey stories through his art, making this piece a captivating addition to the rich heritage of Gond painting.

Manoj Kumar Tekam, a dedicated Gond artist hailing from Dindori, Madhya Pradesh, has been immersed in the vibrant world of Gond art since 2011, learning the intricate techniques from his brother, Bhajju Singh Shyam, a Padma Shree awardee renowned in the field. Keeping the tradition alive within his family, Manoj's daughter and wife also practice Gond art, while his younger brother is currently learning the craft. Despite completing his education up to the 10th grade, Manoj's true passion lies in the mesmerizing strokes of Gond art, which have earned him prestigious awards such as the Rajya Award in Madhya Pradesh and the Kala Rupankar Award in Bhopal, among others.

Manoj's creative journey extends beyond traditional mediums, as he explores innovative avenues to showcase Gond art's timeless charm. From adorning walls and canvases to intricately painting on everyday items like t-shirts, sarees, and coasters, he seamlessly blends traditional motifs with modern narratives. Despite facing language barriers and initial skepticism, Manoj's unwavering determination and belief in his craft have propelled him forward. Inspired by his mentor's perseverance and dedication, Manoj strives to not only excel in his artistic endeavors but also to uplift and inspire budding artists, ensuring that the rich legacy of Gond art continues to flourish for generations to come.

Gond

Gond art is a traditional form of painting practiced by the Gond tribal communities of central India, primarily in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. It is characterized by its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and depictions of nature, animals, and tribal life. From peacocks, and elephants, to an ant, each creation tells a story and reflects the close relation of the Gond people with their environment. Artists use fine lines and dots to create elaborate motifs, often incorporating elements of folklore, mythology, and spirituality into their designs. The art form was passed down orally from generation to generation, with artists using natural materials like leaves, mud, and charcoal to create elaborate designs on walls, floors, and other surfaces. Details According to Gond mythology, the art of painting originated from the Gondi deity, Devi Maoli. It is believed by the Gond people that Devi Maoli taught the first Gond artist, the secrets of painting during a dream. Since then, Gond art has been considered a sacred form of expression by its practitioners. Gond people believe that good images are the harbinger of good luck so they decorate their houses with traditional motifs. Gond art has gained international recognition for its unique aesthetic appeal and cultural significance. An interesting fact about Gond is that each artist has a distinctive signature style. For them, the ethos of life is a mixture of myth and reality, of organic and inorganic forms.
