About the Artwork +
This exquisite Gond painting by renowned artist Manoj Tekam is a captivating representation of the "Tree of Life," a recurring and spiritually resonant theme in Gond art. The central tree, with its rich earthy red-brown trunk and roots firmly embedded in the ground, bursts upward with a mesmerizing display of meticulously detailed leaves rendered in rhythmic, flowing patterns. Each leaf is finely drawn, forming a dense, circular canopy that evokes both movement and serenity. What makes this piece especially enchanting is the integration of birds with wide, watchful eyes that seem to emerge organically from the branches, symbolizing a harmonious coexistence between flora and fauna. These birds, with their vivid yellow and orange plumage and hypnotic eyes, add life and vibrancy to the tree, suggesting vigilance, protection, and spiritual presence. The tree’s branches reach outward in a symmetrical, almost mystical embrace, each tipped with birds that appear both as guardians and as extensions of the tree’s life force. The interplay of colors — the deep ochres, delicate greys, and pops of golden yellow — reflect the traditional natural pigments and storytelling motifs of the Gond tradition. The intricate dot and line work demonstrates not only artistic mastery but also a deep connection to tribal cosmology, where every element of nature is alive and interconnected. Tekam’s signature at the bottom solidifies the authenticity of this work, offering viewers a profound glimpse into the Gond worldview — one that reveres nature as sentient, protective, and eternal. This artwork is both a visual feast and a spiritual meditation on life’s interconnectedness.
