About the Artwork +
This captivating Gond painting by acclaimed artist Venkat Shyam is a sublime visual homage to the divine blessings of Goddess Durga, conveyed through symbolic storytelling and a rich tapestry of color and form. At the center of the artwork lies a majestic grey tiger—the vahana (vehicle) of Goddess Durga—curled protectively in repose, its form enveloped by vibrant hues of saffron, blue, green, and gold. The tiger’s stylized face, rendered with sharp geometric lines and shaded textures, gazes forward with a serene yet alert expression, reflecting strength and vigilance. Resting atop its body is a pair of radiant orange footprints, symbolizing the invisible yet powerful presence of the goddess herself.
These footprints, central to the composition, represent divine touch and sanctity, evoking the sense of a spiritual visitation or blessing. The tiger, usually a symbol of ferocity, here appears peaceful, embodying the protective grace of the goddess rather than raw aggression. The use of bold red in the background heightens the spiritual intensity of the scene, invoking Shakti—the feminine force of the universe. Patterns of dots, an inspirational pattern sought by the artist for the Supreme God, and lines fill the garment-like textures across the lion’s body, reflecting the intricate traditions of Gond artistry.
The juxtaposition of powerful symbols—Durga’s silent footsteps, the sacred animal, and the vibrant aura—transforms this painting into a devotional visual poem. With his characteristic fusion of myth and modernity, Venkat Shyam crafts a compelling portrayal of divine presence that celebrates the quiet strength, beauty, and spiritual guardianship of Goddess Durga in Gond visual language.
