This meaningful Madhubani painting in Godhna style by Priti Karn is a rhythmic exploration of the symbiotic relationship between humanity and the animal kingdom, structured through horizontal registers. Madhubani painting is a vibrant folk art from Bihar characterized by bold colors, intricate patterns, and a complete lack of empty space, often illustrating mythological themes and natural elements like fish, birds, and flowers. This composition uses a vibrant palette of purple, ochre, green, and red, alternating between rows of stylized human figures and processions of spotted deer. Each row is separated by a decorative band featuring a black-and-white checkerboard pattern and vertical Katchni linework, which provides a high-contrast geometric framework for the organic narrative.
The human registers depict a row of four figures with their arms raised, holding red flowers that appear to bloom between them. These figures are rendered with the traditional large, expressive eyes and profile views typical of the Mithila style, their clothing decorated with horizontal stripes and blocks of solid color. Alternating with these are the deer registers, which feature three spotted deer walking in a steady line.
