This vibrant Kalighat painting by master artist Uttam Chitrakar depicts Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, rendered in the classic narrative style of Bengal art traditions. The composition features a bold, centered representation of the elephant-headed deity seated in a majestic pose, filled with the expressive linework and rich color palette characteristic of traditional Kalighat works.
Ganesha is shown with a deep reddish-terracotta upper body and four arms. His two upper hands are raised open towards the sky, while his lower right hand holds a ceremonial conch shell and his lower left hand cradles a bowl filled with sweets. He wears a large, multi-layered crown painted in brilliant shades of orange and yellow, adorned with fine black linework. His large eyes are wide and elongated, drawn with striking white and black strokes, while a subtle third eye sits on his forehead. A dark blue drape with white pearl-like border accents rests on his shoulders, contrasting with a white criss-crossed patterned ornament covering his torso.
The lower half of the deity is draped in a bright yellow-gold dhoti, intricately covered with a dense pattern of small white stars or floral clusters. Ganesha sits cross-legged on a circular green cushion, which rests on a platform decorated with a geometric blue and purple checkered tile floor. In the bottom left corner, his divine mount, the mouse, is depicted in grey tones with a beautifully decorated saddle, looking upward in reverence toward its master.
Framing the upper section of the canvas are two green curtains drawn to the sides, a classic theatrical motif frequently employed in Kalighat paintings to create a stage-like atmosphere. The background remains a simple, unpainted earthy paper tone, ensuring that the viewer's eye focuses entirely on the bold forms and rhythmic lines of the sacred figure.

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
