This Rabari embroidery work by Gitaben Bhavesh Rabari renders a camel in a cool palette of graduated blues and teals, the form abstracted into elongated lines and sharp geometric angles rather than realistic outlines. The camel is the backbone of the nomadic and pastoral lifestyle of the Dhebariya Rabari community. This deep connection is naturally reflected in their textile art.
The embroidery work employed here is the Dhebariya Rabari Katab work (a form of applique traditionally done by the Rabari women of Kutch) features bold shapes. Rabari embroidery is a vibrant, intricate textile craft traditionally practiced by the nomadic and semi-nomadic Rabari pastoralists of the Kutch region in Gujarat and parts of Rajasthan. It is defined by bold geometric motifs, dense elongated chain stitches (cheereli saankdi), and the abundant use of mirrors (aabhlas).
At the centre, two inverted V-shaped loops rise and curve inward until they nearly touch, tracing the elongated necks and hind portion of the camel, worked in bright teal cheereli saankdi chain stitch. Between them, a central triangular form stands as the body of the camel, with the symbolic hump on the tip of the triangle, its point rising to meet the space where the two necks part ways. Flanking them on either side, large triangular fan-shaped panels, each filled with repeating rows of smaller triangles in indigo, slate, and turquoise. This layering of triangle within triangle, tail within tail, is characteristic of how Rabari embroidery decodes the natural world: not through pictorial likeness, but through repeated geometric units built up into a recognisable whole.
The panel is bordered on all sides by a layered frame, with a designed band in between teo sild colored ones with patterns, worked on an undyed cream cotton ground that lets the cooler thread palette read with unusual clarity. This piece shows Rabari embroidery's range within a single tonal family, built on the same structural vocabulary of chain stitch, herringbone fill, and knotted accent.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
