About the Artwork +
Shehzad Ali Sherani's Kishangarh painting of Kardni Ragini from the Ragamala series presents a powerful and unique portrayal, aligning with the described attributes of bravery and divine reverence. Kardni, a consort of Raga Deepak, is depicted standing resolutely, holding a "khad" (sword) in one hand and a dagger made from elephant tusk in the other, symbolizing her courage and strength. Her posture exudes fearlessness, and the divine halo surrounding her head signifies her celestial status. This depiction perfectly captures her valiant spirit, as she is praised by celestial agents descending to earth.
The painting showcases the quintessential Kishangarh style with its elongated figures, refined features, and intricate detailing. The delicate brushwork is evident in the rendering of Kardni's attire, the details of the sword and tusk, and the subtle expressions of the celestial figures. The vibrant color palette, featuring rich reds, yellows, pinks, and blues, enhances the dynamic and spiritual atmosphere of the artwork. The landscape surrounding Kardni is a stylized depiction of a serene environment, characteristic of Kishangarh paintings. A pond, stretches across the foreground, adorned with lotus flowers, creating a sense of tranquility. Architectural elements, including white buildings with arched doorways and a domed structure, are visible in the background, suggesting a palace or a royal courtyard. The rolling hills in the distance, rendered with soft, flowing lines, add to the dreamlike atmosphere.
The muscians depicted with musical instruments, are shown approaching Kardni, emphasizing the divine praise being bestowed upon her. The inscription on top confirms the identity of the Ragini as Kardni and adds a textual layer to the visual narrative. It likely contains verses related to her bravery, her divine status, and her connection to Raga Deepak, enhancing the painting's spiritual and contextual depth. The painting masterfully blends the lyrical essence of Kardni Ragini with the distinctive stylistic elements of Kishangarh art, creating a visually and emotionally evocative masterpiece that celebrates courage, divine reverence, and the spiritual depth of Indian classical music.
