This intricate work of Talapatra Pattachitra, or palm leaf etching, by National Award-winning artist Apindra Swain, represents one of Odisha’s most ancient and demanding craft traditions. Unlike traditional paintings, this art form is created by etching fine lines into dried, seasoned palm leaves using a sharp iron stylus, which are then filled with natural black pigment made from lamp soot or charcoal to reveal the design. The artwork is constructed from several horizontal strips of palm leaf, expertly stitched together with black thread, allowing the piece to be folded like a traditional manuscript. The color palette is elegantly minimalist, relying on the natural creamy-beige tone of the sun-dried leaf contrasted against the sharp, black etched lines, creating a texture that is as tactile as it is visual.
At the center of this complex composition is a circular medallion depicting Lord Krishna and Radha in a divine embrace, surrounded by a border of delicate geometric patterns. Radiating outward from this central union are multiple leaf-shaped segments, each containing a meticulously etched figure representing devotees. The entire narrative is enclosed within a series of highly ornate rectangular borders, featuring a dense tapestry of floral vines, scrolling leaf motifs, and sacred birds like peacocks and parrots in the corners. The level of detail is extraordinary, with every centimeter of the palm leaf surface filled with rhythmic patterns. This masterpiece by Apindra Swain is a profound example of how sacred storytelling and mathematical precision meet, preserving the legacy of Odisha’s palm-leaf manuscripts.

No, we currently sell artworks unframed (unless explicitly mentioned otherwise) and do not provide framing services.
We ship worldwide. All artworks are handmade and couriered securely in transit safe packaging sutaible for the artwork.
