This Pichhwai painting by Suresh Kumar Kumawat presents the Govardhan Puja festival.
Pichwai painting is a devotional textile tradition that developed in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, in association with the Pushtimarg worship of Shrinathji. Literally meaning “that which hangs behind,” pichhwais were originally large painted cloths hung behind the deity in the temple sanctum to create a sacred backdrop for darshan.
At the heart of the composition is Srinathji, depicted in his characteristic Govardhan-dhari posture. His left hand is raised above his head, recalling the episode of Krishna lifting Mount Govardhan to protect the people of Vrindavan, while his right hand rests at his waist. His deep blue complexion is set against a rich red backdrop, while his elaborate crown, pearl and floral garlands, layered necklaces, ornaments and richly patterned garments emphasise his divine presence. A large red-and-gold textile extends behind him like a ceremonial backdrop, framing his figure within the shrine.
Srinathji’s face is rendered frontally and symmetrically to facilitate darshan, with large, elongated almond-shaped eyes outlined in dark pigment that draw the viewer into direct visual communion. His arched brows sweep gracefully above the eyes, while a prominent, straight nose anchors the central axis of the face. The lips are small, gently curved and closed, conveying a serene and composed expression appropriate for a deity in worship. A white vertical tilak rises from the bridge of the nose toward the hairline.
Srinathji is flanked by smaller manifestations of the deity, showing the saat swaroop.
The central shrine is attended by two priests. The figure on the left performs aarti, holding a lamp before Srinathji, while the attendant on the right holds a peacock-feather fan, symbolically serving and honouring the deity. On either side of the shrine, large groups of devotees are arranged in near-mirror symmetry. The men wear yellow dhotis with colourful stoles, while the women are dressed in vibrant saris, their joined hands and attentive postures conveying collective devotion.
This painting presents the celebration of Govardhan Puja, a festival commemorating the lifting of the Govardhan parvat by Krishna to protect the villagers from Indra's wrath. At the center is a mountain of grains, Annakut, while an elaborate arrangement of offerings is kept around it, including baskets and vessels filled with foods. The offerings are arranged in carefully ordered rows, creating a visual transition between the divine figure above and the pastoral landscape below.
The lower register moves from the temple interior into the landscape of Vrindavan. A procession of white cows is depicted with characteristic red handprints associated with Krishna, their heads raised as though looking towards the deity.
At the very bottom, the Yamuna is represented through horizontal bands of water populated with lotus leaves and blooming lotus flowers. This aquatic register anchors the composition in the sacred geography of Krishna’s Vrindavan.
The architectural setting is crowned by a large pavilion-like structure, above which appears a Dhwaja, a Vaishnava ceremonial flag, marking the sacred nature of the shrine. The upper section is rendered in deep blue and patterned with repeated white floral motifs, while the roof is articulated through carefully repeated geometric and ornamental forms.
The painting is enclosed within an elaborate decorative border depicting the 24 swaroops of Shrinathji, representing the various festivals celebrated in the tradition. The outermost border is composed of intricate vegetal and floral motifs in red, green, yellow and blue, further reinforcing the ornamental richness of the composition.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
