This sacred and intricate artwork is an Aipan (or Aipan Chowki) by artist Ruchi Nainwal, displaying ritualistic geometric motifs traditionally drawn on floors and walls for ceremonies in Uttarakhand.
Aipan is characterized by its stark, ritualistic simplicity, using a limited palette of white paste (made from rice flour, called biswar) on a red ochre background. The composition is dominated by a central star or hexagonal design formed by intricate line work, which is surrounded by multiple concentric circles and decorative borders. At the very center are stylized footprints (known as Laxmi ke Pag), which symbolize the invocation and welcoming of the Goddess Lakshmi and prosperity into the home.
The entire square is enclosed within elaborate, repeating patterns of loops and dots that emphasize its sacred geometry and ritualistic function. This piece beautifully captures the core spiritual tradition of Aipan art, creating a powerful, symbolic design for auspicious occasions.
